Death Valley, located in the Mojave Desert in California, acquired its name from pioneers who got lost in the area. After their near-death experience, one of the men in the group nicknamed the area Death Valley. During the summer, it is one of the hottest places on Earth. Not only is it the hottest, but it is also the lowest, containing elevations that are below sea level.
